This exhibition is a ritual for summoning new yōkai through haiku poetry, in which the author, the viewer, and AI collaborate.
108 linked verses (5-7-5 syllable structure) were created through an automatic writing process facilitated by Takakura Kazuki and Takeda Shun. These verses are then broken down into individual words, creating a pool of 108 x 108 x 108 words. Viewers are invited to create their own haiku (5-7-5) by selecting words from this pool.
The haiku selected by the viewers are then transformed into 50-word English poems by ChatGPT. The resulting poems are read by an image-generating AI, developed by Kandagawa Sōyō and Takakura, which mimics Takakura's artistic style. This process summons a new yōkai, which is immediately turned into an NFT bearing the name of the haiku and released online.
This exhibition revisits a theme that Surrealism had pursued from the perspective of today's AI. Modern generative AI, such as ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion, learns from archives of human texts and images available on the internet and outputs text and images based on non-human imagination. This process of accessing the archives of humanity through the internet and using non-human imagination resembles Surrealism's attempt to access the human unconscious during its heyday. Instead of accessing the internal world of dreams and unconsciousness, modern humans access the collective archive of humanity through the internet and use non-human imagination to make choices based on "unconscious consciousness." This exhibition performs a ritual to summon countless new "yokai" as non-existing beings on the digital realm through the collaborative imagination of the author, viewer, and AI.
